New Jersey Gov. Sherrill Blames Software Error for Registering 6,600 Noncitizens to Vote
But only 400 of them voted, you guys. No biggie.
“Software Error.”
According to New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a software error at the Motor Vehicles Commission signed up over 6,600 noncitizens to vote.
But only 400 of them voted, you guys. No biggie.
Last week I learned that a serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System led to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated that they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024, almost three years prior to my taking office. These individuals…
— Governor Mikie Sherrill (@GovSherrillNJ) July 21, 2026
The registration occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, three years before Sherrill took office.
Supposedly, people answered “no” when asked whether they held U.S. citizenship on driver’s license or identification card applications.
“This happened under the previous administration and, upon learning this information, I immediately ordered my chief counsel to launch an investigation to get to the bottom of what occurred,” claimed Sherrill. “I also ordered the removal of any residents from our voter rolls who were erroneously added between June 2023 and June 2024. The new MVC Administrator that I appointed has begun the process of replacing the vendor responsible for administering the system.”
Of course, Sherrill didn’t miss an opportunity to attack President Donald Trump, claiming he’s the one weaponizing elections for political gains and she’s the one protecting elections.
The lady had the absolute nerve to say, “I think that Donald Trump has done more to undermine free elections in this country than certainly anyone in my lifetime, including [Russian President] Vladimir Putin.”
Okay, bro.
Weird how this comes to light after Trump delivered a big speech about election fraud and threats against states that do not clean up their voter rolls.
Also weird the news comes out a few days after DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin backed up Trump’s remarks, reiterating that officials found 35,152 possible noncitizens registered to vote in New Jersey.
I don’t believe in coincidences.

I’m sure she’s committed to making sure that no such errors are discovered in the future.
The key word being “discovered”
The great 21st century excuse will be: The AI did it.
Typical that a demorat governor would try to blame the Trump administration for the failings of the prior New Jersey governor (a demorat administration).
1) So 400 voted? Have they been arrested?
2) There is no such thing as a software error. A CPU does exactly what you tell it to do. So who played with the machine? They need lots of jail time also.
1. The 400 who voted did nothing wrong. If I were in a foreign country, and found that the government had registered me to vote even though I had truthfully told it that I was an alien, I would assume that the local laws and customs allowed this. How should I know otherwise?
2. There certainly is such a thing as a software error. Yes, a CPU does exactly what you tell it to do — not what you obviously meant to tell it to do. Have you ever written working code? Evidently not, if you’re unaware of bugs and the endless debugging cycle.
Which is why BHO double talked about voting…. inferring but (nudge) not inferring. I have written thousands of lines of code. GIGO,,, Selling software… I wonder if there was a clause about failure? All i can say is that there appears to be selective subroutines … “If Dem..count vote”… “If Re publican …. go to next subroutine to determine present total votes and countyDem as needed”. Prove me wrong circa 2020.
NJ registers 6600 illegals due to software error
Much like grocery store registers where error is always in their favor
The Governor states, “… led to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated that they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024…” Citizenship, at least in seems for the purpose of New Jersey (and my state) voting roles, is self declared. So the assumption is that all people are honest. Given that illegal aliens and violated some aspect of the law (overstaying previously valid visas, crossing the border w/o proper authorization, repeated infractions of the above, …), these are not indicators of adherence to high standards of honesty. How about letting DHS audit state voting roles for matches to non-citizens?
A few days ago, as I began to administer my mother’s estate, I found the naturalization certificates of my father’s parents who immigrated separately from Lithuania in the in the early 1900’s. On the reverse of each was a stamp from the registrar of voters in Holyoke, MA dated 1914 and 1922, respectively. I’m furious that no effort is made any longer to verify the citizenship of voters. Also happy to have left NJ after spending our working lives there as it elected a witch like Sherrill as Governor.
Have you checked to see if they’re still voting?
1. There is nothing in the story to indicate that any of the 6,600 were illegal. You’re just making that up. There is no less reason to trust an alien’s honesty than a citizen’s.
2. These 6,600 were honest. They honestly answered that they were aliens. That they were registered anyway was none of their doing.
That said, of course any system that depends on people’s honesty will inevitably fail, and is designed to fail. These 6,600 people were honest, but how many people were not? That dishonest people exist in large numbers is indisputable, so with a system that depends entirely on people’s honesty how could there not be large numbers of people who dishonestly submit false registrations?
Imagine a bank that allows people to withdraw money from the bank simply by submitting a withdrawal slip asserting that they have an account and it has money in it, with no attempt to verify this information. Imagine that the tellers simply hand out cash to all who submit slips, and the information is not entered into the system until the end of the day. Can you imagine that a day would go by without numerous false withdrawals?!
Mikie Sherrill and cheating? No way…
“Mikie Sherrill was barred from walking at her Naval Academy graduation in 1994 due to her involvement in a significant cheating scandal that implicated over 130 midshipmen.”.
They still graduated her? In the past cheating would have been grounds for immediate dismissal with a requirement to payback the cost of education. Times they are a changing,
There was a deal made, IIRC. Others did not get her benefit of the doubt.
Their party registrations are a public record in NJ.
And . . . ? They were still allowed to register to vote? Sounds to me that this is something a little more than a “software error” that allowed non-citizens to vote. The “serious software error” happened over a whole year (June 2023 to June 2024) and nobody noticed it happening? The question I have is how many illegals were registered to vote between June 2024 and the present time. Time for the state of New Jersey to audit it’s complete voter record rolls and determine if any others were accidentally registered to vote due to that “serious software error”.
“And . . . ? They were still allowed to register to vote?”
I believe the implication here is that they never took any steps to register to vote, the DMV software registered them regardless.
I doubt it was an “error” until it was discovered.
Or that they did register, because the DMV person told them to, but when the system asked about their citizenship they told the truth. This should have caused the system to say “Sorry, you’re not eligible” and close the application process, but it didn’t do that and proceeded as if the answer were “yes”.
And how many illegals were allowed to register to vote prior to 2023.
Unknown and unknowable because this particular error was allegedly introduced then.
Absolutely. A software error. had absolutely nothing to do with non-citizens lying on the forms they filled out. Just plain old software errors.
They didn’t lie. They told the truth. Their registrations went through anyway.
Not her fault? Someone should ask her if she knows who Harry Truman was?
Pull the other one. It jingles.
I’d like to know which party these people voted for.
Their party registrations are a public record in NJ.
That doesn’t tell us how the 400 voted.
Gov Sherrill claims she ‘learned last week’ …would that be due to Homeland providing a list to NJ or is there some newfound rigorous review process by NJ bureaucracy? Since Gov Sherrill only pledged to remove the 6,600 non Citizens who illegally registered to vote (claiming a software issue was to blame) from June ’23-June ’24 and not any who may have been registered prior to or since then nor did she announce criminal charges being sought against the 400 she herself admits illegally voted I’ma guess this is less about cleaning the rolls and more about getting caught. FWIW once you get sworn into office all the problems your predecessor(s) left for you are yours to fix, sure you get some leeway to act but you wanted the job and it ain’t all roses, sometimes there’s an ongoing sewage leak making the roses bloom and you inherit both.
Supposedly this particular bug only existed in the system between those dates, so there weren’t any whom it registered prior to or since then.
And the 400 shouldn’t be charged without evidence that they knew their registrations were invalid. As aliens, they can’t be expected to be experts in US law, especially when the government tells them something and they have no reason to doubt it.
Significant legal expertise is totes unnecessary for basic questions in the information age. A simple Google search will quickly reveal the fact that only Citizens may vote in Federal Elections. As for knowledge/intent at registration ….in my State and I suspect every State they ask a series of standard questions (one of which is are you a US Citizen) hand you back a form to sign so that a pen/ink signature sample is on record and that you attest to the accuracy of the info on the form.
The 400 went beyond that and actually cast a ballot. There’s been a near constant drumbeat of media coverage re non Citizen voting since 2015. Presumably these folks voted in 2024 based on registration in ’23/’24. At some point adults gotta be held responsible for their actions and their failures to take appropriate action.
I’m perfectly willing to concede the arguments about ‘the govt employees told me X’ but only if you’re willing to apply that to illegal aliens. There’s been a non-stop avalanche of media coverage informing these folks the US govt wants them to GTFO of the USA with print, TV, ads publicity for the ‘free ticket + $2K’ to assist that. So since they know the govt told them to go home they gotta do that without any further inquiry.
They were not required to make that Google search. They did what the DMV person said, truthfully answered that they were aliens, and were told they could vote. Why should they not have trusted that?
Surely you know that there are many people who don’t follow the news, and even a “media avalanche” would not reach them. My late parents barely even knew there was an election unless someone specifically told them so and urged them to vote.
I blame motor voter
Yes, this is clearly the result of a bug in the software NJ was using to implement the Motor Voter Act.
democrats looked upon this as a feature,
I doubt that it was a bug, I’d say more of a feature
The problem isn’t illegal voters but votes that nobody cast that are rounded up when needed.
Both are problems. And if 6,600 honest people were registered, the number of dishonest people who registered must surely be much higher. And they would have voted in higher proportion than the honest ones.

The identity services provider New Jersey uses at the DMV is FIRING BACK at Gov. Sherrill, saying the NJ DIVISION OF ELECTIONS were the ones who registered 6,600 foreign voters
This was NOT a “software error.” This is a SCANDAL.
“IDEMIA’s role is to transmit information through the motor vehicle system. The voter registration information is transmitted to the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Elections, which is ultimately responsible for verifying eligibility to vote.
Information submitted by IDEMIA must still be validated and adjudicated by the Division of Elections.”
So the Division of Elections MANUALLY APPROVED over SIX THOUSAND foreigners to vote. They were not automatically registered by the software provider as the governor claimed.
So, the thing that the Communists say never happens most definitely did happen. Secondly, there was no error.
Of course it happened.
I’m willing to accept that this time it was an error, because these 6,600 people were clearly honest, and thus wouldn’t have been involved in shenanigans. But if there were that many honest people who fell through a random crack and were registered, how many more dishonest people must there be who deliberately registered when they weren’t eligible? It’s unknowable, but it must surely be higher than the number of honest people who did it accidentally.
Error, nor not, isn’t it funny how it’s always in the favor of these scumbags?
Couple of questions:
1) How does she know that the “glitch” only affected 6600 people?
2) How does she know that “only 400” of them voted?
3) If all of those are known, does she know how they voted?
